Café Mam is celebrating our 31st year of great coffee, and working toward environmental and social justice!

Café Mam is a family-owned and operated coffee company based in Eugene, Oregon. Our roots go deep in organic agriculture, and our foundation is built on principles of ethical sourcing, sustainability, environmentalism, cultural identity, human dignity, and of course high quality, fresh and locally roasted coffee.

Since our inception in 1990, we have only sourced 100% organic (certified by Oregon Tilth) and fairly traded (certified by SPP and Fair Trade USA) coffee from indigenous cooperatives in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. The growers, primarily of the Mam, Tzetzal and Mochó peoples, are organized according to egalitarian democratic ideals that emphasize hard work, responsibility to the cooperative, and high standards.

The cooperatives’ programs provide countless benefits to outlying native communities. Each purchase of Café Mam coffee helps support their goals of honoring and healing the earth, self-sufficiency, political independence, sustainable development of rural communities, child welfare (including education and nutrition), defense of indigenous cultural identity, and education in organic agriculture.

Jeremy Thaler and Constance Potter met while establishing Mifflin Street Co-op in Madison, Wisconsin. They shared a common belief in the importance of herbal supplements, worker-owned cooperatives, organic and sustainable farming and the power of community. Upon leaving Madison and moving to Rochester, New York, they established a worker cooperative distribution called Clear Eye Distribution, and a whole-grain bakery that also produced granola using a barrel roaster.

A chance question from a friend, “You have a barrel roaster; why don’t you use it to make peanut butter?” led Jeremy to the peanut butter business. In 1976, Once Again Nut Butter was born. When Jeremy and Connie left Rochester for a more rural area, they moved the company into their 800-square foot basement and manufactured peanut butter there until they purchased the current facility in 1981.

Since 1999, Pilgrim's Market has been the Inland Northwest HOT SPOT for the finest natural and organic foods, education, green events and more. As the health-seeking consumer continues to seek out and support local food growers and retailers, Pilgrim's Market is the perfect example of a homegrown, locally owned alternative to massive, foreign-owned national chains like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Farmer Direct Organic began as Farmer Direct Co-op. Founded by Jason Freeman in 2002, the organization formed to help drive price transparency for organic farmers in the Great Plains and Prairies. This initiative changed the game overnight, and soon other buyers began delivering better, more transparent pricing to the farmers as well. Although it is a separate business today, Farmer Direct Organic continues to be steadfast in their commitment to operating with uncompromising quality and transparency. Their certified Tested Glyphosate Free products are always organic, traceable, and brought to you in partnership with small family farms in the US and Canada.
